FRAY RAMÓN MARTÍNEZ VIGIL(1840 - 1904)
Although he was born in Tiñana, Siero, six months after his birth he was
already in Laviana, where he spent his childhood and the first years of his youth and where his family settled
down, for this reason he never lost contact with this council with which he was very close. He entered the
Dominican order of Ocaña, where he became the pupil of brother José María Morán; he was sent to Manila, where
he became a pupil of brother Zeferino and in 1876 was named Attorney general of the Dominican order in the
parliaments of Madrid and Rome. In 1884 he was named Bishop. He was a very active Bishop: he motivated and ended
the construction work of the Basílica of Covadonga, the parish church of Laviana and many others. He wrote
several literary works related to his ministry and gave rise to contreversy with Leopoldo Alas, Clarín, with
the publication of La Regenta.
